DemocracyNow! on WBAI had planned a debate today between
the Minutemen's Gilchrist and Karina Garcia, political chair of Chicano
Caucus. Gilchrist hung up after a couple minutes (see the DN site for a
description), but not before blaming the ISO for the alleged disruption.
Garcia was great. She said they never asked the
university to ban him from speaking, that he had Columbia and NYPD security,
that nobody attacked him, and that "when we went up on stage WE were attacked.
It wasn?t a free speech issue. He?s a coward, he's very tough when has a
shotgun in the middle of the desert facing unarmed immigrants."
She also pointed to the Minutemen's recruits from the neoNazi
National Alliance and other fascist groups. And in response to Gilchrist's
claims about not being violent or a racist, she pointed out "David Duke took
off his hood when he ran for Louisiana governor. What Gilchrist represents in
the Mexican community is the same as what Duke and Klan represent for the
African-American community.
"He didn?t feel physically threatened. He was in the midst of 150 people
crowding the audience. He felt isolated [you can hear in the audio of the
event the crowd cheering, clearly on behalf of the protesters-AP]. He
terminated his own speech.
When asked about the difference in coverage between the Spanish-
and English-language media, she said -- clearly moved -- "Oh my God, oh wow. If
you saw Univision, you can see we were attacked. The English press claimed we
attacked. And all of a sudden Bloomberg is a free speech advocate. Two years
ago during the RNC he didn?t allow protest permits."
"This isn?t a battle of ideas, this is about people with guns on the
border. They say they should be able to shoot illegals."
P.S. The online petition against reprisals (see Counterpunch's website of the
day) is at almost 1900 signatures.
