RE: [Marxism] RE: Gossip about Paris Hilton

Come on now, it should be possible for a marxist explication of the
Paris Hilton phenomena.

It used to be that the scions of the big bourgeois families would go to
Europe to meet and marry the descendants of royalty(often in dubious
financial circumstances, ie Henry James).

Part of the development of late capitalism is to replace decayed royalty
with transient celebrity, actors, athletes, supermodels etc. Occasionally
a Diana Spencer comes along to combine aristocracy and celebrity, but
today's public doesn't much care about monarchy.

So now we have an example of a bourgeois seeking and reveling in ersatz
celebrity, in order to fulfill the ultimate in current super status,
having one's every move chronicled by the paparazzi.

Is this a "dancing on the deck of the Titanic" trend? I would tend to
think so.
