It's almost as if the Israel Lobby felt that over-the-top denial was not enough
to serve as a wink and a nudge to other elites that Walt and Mearsheimer's
analysis was in reality sound, so they figured that some outrageous act of
censorship would make it plainer. That's who the chilling effect is aimed
at--elites. The masses will of course remain oblivious to all this because they
don't have the knowledge frame to give such moments meaning. The Lobby is going
after Finkelstein in a big way, too, as his tenure case is coming up.
