[Marxism] Re: Brazil s Lula still ahead in Polls
As quoted by Walter Lippman:
"[Alarcon] pauses, points an index finger for emphasis, and tells me
"the most important task for the Latin American left" is to reelect
President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva in Brazil".
I would agree, but only after some nicety around the right modal verb in
English:
It's not that the Latin American Left MUST reelect Lula, it's only that the
only thing the Latin American Left CAN do is to reelect Lula, as all
alternatives to him are worse off.
I don't know if that applies to Thabo Mbeki. The reelection of Lula is
important in that it's a preemptive move against the Brazilian Right and its
intended retrospective rehabilitation of an strictly neoliberal government
such as Cardoso's; in the Mbeki case - I do not imagine some foprce in the
SA political specter could think of rehabilitating apartheid.
