I fear Louis Pr. is not grasping the actual alternatives at stake.

This "against the stream" image reminded me of Huck Finn and Jim on 
their downriver tour of the Mississipi in antebellum America.

Is Lula the stream we must swim against?  Or it is imperialism?  

IMHO, it is not Lula but imperialism.  However, if this is so, then 
what we must do is to build a motorboat in order to replace Lula's 
wretched raft, because Lula's problem is not the _direction_ of his 
movement but the slowliness and, yes, slovenliness of his action.

The raft is heading to Cairo.  Too slowly, and with the rudder in bad 
hands.  But it is still heading to Cairo.  We should not get off it, 
because the shores of the Big Muddy are too dangerous (too many slave-
hunters), nor -worse yet- support the guys who want it heading 
downriver to Memphis or New Orleans.  What we must do is both to keep 
the raft on its strenuous upriver march and _at the same time and in 
the middle of the river_ build a motorboat to offer other people on 
the raft to reach the port of freedom sooner.
