Re: [Marxism] Marxism and Conspiracy
CB: This is the interesting , more general point of this discussion.
Understanding the class struggle is not confined to general and abstract
political economy. It also involves examining specific events.
For example, during the U.S. Civil War , Marx wrote on the Trent case. He
wrote on it precisely because the rightwing was trying to use the incident
as a provocation to get the British to join the Confederacy in the war.
I am not sure what you mean by "the rightwing". The British Empire,
despite having abolished slavery, tilted to the South because it was
a primary source of cotton. This Trent crisis was precipitated by a
US Navy warship stopping a British ship in international waters to
capture two Confederate ambassadors on board. The British began to
speak of a military reprisal but when the US released the men,
tensions were eased. The British might have used the incident as a
provocation, but this is fairly routine in military-diplomatic
affairs. Taking over for the British, the US stages such provocations
all the time.
