Parallel Purges
Academic Freedom in Iran and America

This past year, for example, a number of politicians called for the firing
of University of Colorado professor Ward Churchill for harsh remarks he
made about U.S. policy, and it appears that the university is going to
answer those calls,

Politicians called for the firing of Churchill for he compared World
Trade Center victims to Adolf Eichmann, the Nazi who orchestrated the
Holocaust. That isn't "harsh remarks about US policy", but a
grotesquely insensitive remark about innocent victims. His right to
make grotesque remarks should be protected under free speech rights,
of course, and the politicians were wrong to call for his firing. But
to say that what provoked the calls was merely "a harsh remark about
foreign policy" is inaccurate.
