RE: [Marxism] Cockburn on 9/11 conspiracy nuts

It is indeed strange.

And, of course, people see things all the time--especially things they
are supposed to see. I am reminded of WI Thomas famous theorem: If
people believe things are real then they are real in their consequences.
While not always true, it is certain more frequently true than it ought
to be. And we know that eyewitness testimony is terrible evidence for
anything. I must confess, even in the face of ridicule, that I have
looked at the Pentagon photos and read the eyewitness accounts and while
I don't know what hit the Pentagon, the conclusion that a jet airliner
hit the building isn't a conclusion that satisfies me. I am open to
convincing. But it's funny that, rather than convincing me, I would be
made to feel not altogether rational instead.

De omnibus dubitandum
Andrew

Subject: [Marxism] Cockburn on 9/11 conspiracy nuts

CB: Gee, presumably Cockburn's alternative to the "official" story as to
what happened with the stone and Jesus is ...huh ... A conspiracy by the
Gospel writers. Odd example to use in discouraging conspiracy theories.
