"Speaking of this", I remember a couple of friends of
mine coming out in the early 80s, just before AIDS hit
the newspapers.
I wasn't all that interested in politics then, but I
remember thinking that they picked absolutely the
worst time in the world to become publicly gay.
Of course, not being publicly gay and becoming
infected with HIV would have been worse, but hey...
In the Real World(tm), AIDS is, of course, primarily a
heterosexually transmitted disease, but Australia
isn't part of the Real World(tm).
