Re: [Marxism] antisemitism workshop audio now online

From: "spencer s" <spencerpdx@xxxxxxxxx>

The IMC's are awash with antisemitic posts about the
jewish neo-cons, zionist conpiracies in the sudan, how
israel controls the US, etc. Usually they are what
Adorno called "secondary antisemitism" in 1965 --
classic antisemitic narratives which use Israel
instead of "the Jews", but repeat the same narrative
structure.

I'm doing a bit of research into Adorno's Zionism at the moment, but haven't come across that (clearly extremely relevant) term of his before. Which 1965 text is it to be found in?

Adorno's paradigms are very dodgy in this context - one could equally use them (as the neo-cons do) to argue that anti-capitalism or anti-Americanism are forms of 'secondary antisemitism' as well.

Whilst a big admirer of Adorno, and deeply influenced by his thinking on consciousness, aesthetic 'commitment' and the culture industry, I feel strongly that his ontological view of anti-semitism and Auschwitz, overriding many elements of his pre-war Marxism, renders quite a bit of his thought appropriable by reactionary interests. In terms of what Finkelstein refers to as the mystification of the Holocaust (placing it beyond rational explanation, flying in the face of historians of all persuasions who have understood the urgent necessity *of* trying to understand how and why it happened), Adorno is a major offender.

Solidarity,
Ian
