Above begins with recognition that:

1) The Islamic revival has developed into broad based social movement
functioning today rhrough Muslim world and in communities around the
globe. The goal is to transform society through transformation of
individuals. Da'wah (Islamic Call) organizations exist at all levels
of education, in all forms of communication, in banks and investment
houses, in social services, in student associations, in the
professions, in the police and military
Common to the Islamic revival is affirmation of an Islamic ideological
alternative to secular nationalism, western capitalism, and socialism.
Failures of the past - from pan-Turanianism (Turkish unity) to
pan-Arabism to Arab nationalism have left an ideological void.

2) Far from a monolith, the Islamic revival is ideologically diverse,
influenced as much by local socio-political conditons as by religious
faith. There has always been and there remains great diversity within
and among various Islamic groups, reflecting local, national,
cultural, and economic realities. Tendency in the West - and most
certainly the U.S. - is to myopically lump all Islamic groups together
through the prism of extremism and terrorism. This obviously
complicates any ability to understand the full range of Islamic forces
at work. Of course, since neither the mainstream media nor U.S.
policymakers wish to do jusrtce to the complex reality of Islamic
revivalism, they actually work to undermine "U.S." interests in the
Middle East and the Islamic world. Michael Hoover
