In the first trial on charges of human rights violations since a pair of
amnesty laws were overturned last year, Julio SimÃn, a federal police official

who was in charge of a clandestine detention center during the military
dictatorship that ruled the country from 1976 to 1983, was sentenced to 25
years in
prison. He was accused of the kidnapping, torture and forced disappearance of
a Buenos Aires couple in 1978, as well as taking illegal custody of their
8-month-old daughter. âThis is a historic day that opens the path to all the
trials that need to take place,â said Estela de Carlotto, director of the
Grandmothers of the Plaza de Mayo, a leading human rights group.
