[Marxism] Re: Fidel
Well, I certainly hope Fidel's condition is not grave or critical, and I
am assuming not.
He has certainly been undergoing a grueling schedule of travel,
speeches, and no doubt many other responsibilities for someone of his
age. No doubt he enjoys quite a bit of it, but still....
Personally, I have long hoped that the transition to a new leadership
team would begin while Fidel was still alive. Among other things, this
would help save Washington from some insane and costly military
adventure to take control of the "transition." The US has been
virtually threatening to invade upon Fidel's death. Better to have a
new team up and running and, to some degree, stabilized before that
happens, in my opinion.
It will also allow the Cuban people to gain confidence in a new team,
and to sort out some of the initial differences over direction that are
likely to arise with Fidel's political knowledge and skills still on
hand for consultation or intervention..
So, assuming that Fidel recovers sufficiently, continuing with this
change could turn out to be all for the good. Not my decision, of
course. Fidel has been voicing confidence in the transition for a long
time. He certainly knows Cuba better than most of us. While I can't
say that I was in a rush for the change, this has never really been a
one-man show. The Cuban revolution has not been in power for almost
fifty years without a lot of revolutionaries contributing to that.
I suspect that the expectations that without Fidel at the top Cuba will
suddenly turn into China, Vietnam, French social democracy, or Miami
will all turn out to be illusory.
But a new phase of the adventure may be beginning. .
