Walter Lippmann writes:
Someone posted a message earlier today about the proposal that
a billion Lebanese would march to demand an end to the Israeli
attacks on their country. Imagine, a "Million Lebanese March".
I understand that the Lebanese government told Condoleezza Rice
not to come to Lebanon today. Perhaps a few of those Lebanese
who were so hot to have the Syrians out of their country have
now had a vew second thoughts. Israel wasn't bombing them when
Syrian troops were occupying parts of Lebanon not long ago...
Any information on that Lebanese march idea?
===========================
Unfortunately, that was just one observer, William Lind, speculating in an
antiwar.com article about the immense political pressure on the Israelis of
a mass march of Lebanese men, women, and children into the war zone in south
Lebanon.

It's an inspired idea. Obviously, there is the great danger the Israelis
would bomb ("accidentally") or open fire on the marchers - as they have
against many smaller demonstrations in Palestine - but this risk is always
widely understood to be present in such situations (Sharpeville, Amritsar.
etc.). I'd be amazed, given the civilian toll already being exacted by the
Israelis, if Hezbollah and the other mass organizations would have any
difficulty finding volunteers. Outside supporters, including those with
international reputations, could also be quickly mobilized, as they were
during the the civil rights marches in the US.
I haven't read any suggestions like this coming out of the leadership of the
popular movements in the region, but you have to expect the idea been
canvassed internally. Perhaps the reason we haven't heard more about it is
because Hezbollah may be confidently laying in wait to inflict a decisive
military defeat on an large-scale Israeli invasion force which is massing
across the border, and doesn't want its supporters caught in the crossfire.
