Cuba Condemns Israeli Military Escalation in Gaza Strip
Havana, June 30 (ACN) Cuba's Ministry of Foreign Affairs strongly
condemned the recent military action unleashed by Israel in the Gaza
Strip, in a declaration issued on Thursday.
The declaration, published by the Granma newspaper, reads that "with
deep concern, the Cuban Foreign Ministry has learned of the
large-scale military operation launched by Israel since very early
hours of June 28, 2006 in the Gaza Strip, with the mobilization of
nearly 5,000 troops, hundreds of tanks and other military equipment."
The Israeli operation targeted the main electric plant in the zone,
leaving half of that area without electricity. Israel bombed some of
the bridges that connected different areas of the Gaza strip,
re-occupied important areas in that southern Palestinian territory,
and arrested many Palestinian government leaders and members of the
Palestinian Legislative Council, the Cuban declaration explains.
"Israel has used as an excuse for its barbarian aggression, the
capture of an Israeli soldier by the Palestinian resistance forces
which were taking action against the Israeli occupation; but Israel
hides the fact that its troops have murdered 52 Palestinians,
including nine children in June alone, according to renowned
international organizations," the declaration reads.
The document recalls that the Israeli aggression is taking place just
when an agreement had been reached between Palestinian political
forces which would contribute to the resumption of peace negotiations
between Palestinians and Israelis. This was in accordance with
resolutions passed by the UN General Assembly and the Security
Council.
The Cuban declaration also expresses the rejection by the island's
Foreign Ministry of the violation of Syrian air space by Israeli war
planes, which --along with the barbarian Israeli attack on the Gaza
Strip-- once again exposes the Middle East to a dangerous escalation
of violence and poses a threat to world peace and security.
"Like in the past, Israel's actions expose its overpowering strength
and impunity provided by the economic and military support it
receives, along with the permanent US veto at the UN Security
Council," the declaration points out.
In the document the Cuban Foreign Ministry expresses its strongest
condemnation of the barbarian military aggression against the Gaza
Strip and calls on the international community and world peace-loving
forces to mobilize and demand the immediate and unconditional
withdrawal of Israeli troops from the Gaza Strip, the ceasing of
state-terror actions by Israel, the respect for the inalienable
rights of the Palestinian people, including the setting up of an
independent and sovereign Palestinian state with western Jerusalem as
its capital city, the return home of all refugees and the
unconditional return of all Arab territories which were occupied by
Israel in June 1967. This is the only way to reach just and lasting
peace between all nations of the region, concluded the declaration
issued by the Cuban Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
