[Marxism] Query from a friend
Renato Pompeu
Lenin wrote in the Philosophical Notebooks in 1916 that one must master in
its entirety the Science of Logic by Hegel in order to understand Chapter I
and that so, 50 years later, no Marxist had understood Marx.
^^^^^
CB: Yea, I know ( was it Chapter I or the whole thing ?). When I read that I
started studying _The Science of Logic_ again ( The small logic :>)) Can't
say I mastered it, but Chapter I of _Capital_ still seems clear to me.
Sometimes I wonder if Lenin was sort of joking to himself, since it's in a
personal notebook.
Also, Marx says in one Preface that he coquetted with Hegel's style in it.
And Lenin also advised the Bolshevik/CPSU to form study groups of
"materialist friends of philosophy" or some such, and study the history of
philosophy.
So, Lenin ,the great practitioner, advised the study of philosphy. See my
"Activist Materialism and the 'End' of Philosophy" ( posted on Marxmail list
heading) at
http://www.marxmail.org/archives/may98/journal_theory.htm
,where I suggest philosophy is important to practice, contrary to the
common notion about philosophy as distant from the real world.
