[Marxism] Re: query on Horkheimer
"a revolutionary career does not lead to banquets and honorary titles,
interesting research and professorial wages. It leads to misery, disgrace,
ingratitude, prison and a voyage into the unknown, illuminated by only an
almost superhuman belief."
This Horkheimer quotation is from a collection of notes and aphorisms
from 1926 to 1931, published in 1933: "Dämmerung. Notizen in
Deutschland". The German word "Dämmerung" means the twilight periods
of the day: dawn in the morning and dusk in the evening; in this case
Horkheimer means dawn. I found out that there is an English volume
from 1978: Max Horkheimer, Dawn and Decline. Notes. 1926-1931 and
1950-1969, New York: Seabury. The quotation is from the text
"Diskussion über die Revolution" (discussion on revolution),
approximately at the end of the first quarter of the "Dawn"
collection. I hope this indication will help.
