[Marxism] Re: Timor

TO'L: "... the terror had largely run its course before Australian troops
landed in Darwin nearly four weeks later."

CF: I assume the bit about Darwin is a typo - they were in Darwin (and
Townsville, etc) but landed in Dili. But troops landed on 20 September 1999. So
are you saying that the terror had stopped on 23 August 1999?

TO'L: "After the referendum, the TNI abandoned its delusion that it could
maintain control of East Timor. Instead it decided on a scorched earth
withdrawal..."

CF: Once again, where is the evidence that Indonesia was going to withdraw?

TO'L: "As we shall see below, Howard had been preparing a military response for
months..."

(ii) "At least the troops prevented a continuing reign of terror."

After the referendum, the TNI abandoned its delusion that it could maintain
control of East Timor. Instead it decided on a scorched earth withdrawal to
punish the local population
