Horacio writes, "However, The DRM is proprietary, but most of the
restrictions are a product of the record companies rather than Apple. It was
only by implementing the DRM that Apple could get them to open the
vaults..."
Also, there's a huge hole wide enough for any truck, which is you burn music
downloaded from iTunes in standard audio CD format, which of course means
the encryption has been stripped out.
As for BSD, Steve Jobs has been using that since the NeXT cube, 20 years
ago. But its what he put on top of it that really counts. The NeXTstep OS
was so advanced that when it was upgraded as OSX for the Mac it was
obviously much better than Windows.
Also, it's obvious that development for the Intel platform never stopped.
When Apple bought NeXT it was a multiplatform OS, and although that side of
it remained hidden in recent years, the OS was pretty much ready for X86
when Jobs decided to switch microprocessors.
Among other things, the world wide web (what most people think of as "the
internet") was developed on the NeXT cube. A lot of the features --and
limitations-- of the world wide web and the hypertext protocol come directly
from NeXTstep, like single-clicking links to access pages, etc.
