I don't disagree with either Redden or Alam. I was being cautious
because I don't know how to interpret the attacks on the U.S. forces
and the intergroup civil war that is developing. But a confidential
memo from within the Bush administration must be given great credence.

I think that Shawn may have misinterpreted the thrust of my argument.
As he says, at this stage it appears that the U.S. presence is
opposed by every element in Iraq society. As the note from the U.S.
embassy indicates, they are very afraid for their own quislings. It
looks more like Vietnam on the eve of throwing the U.S. out than
South Korea, which is the closest model we have for a large permanent
presence in a client state.
