Subject: [LAAMN] Black Churches Take Lead in Demanding Jobs- "United Job
Creation Initiative"
Black Churches Take Lead in Demanding Jobs
"An unprecedented leadership alliance of Los Angeles 'mega churches'" is the
self-description of "leaders representing their many thousands of members" from
City of Refuge Ministries
First AME
Second AME
West Los Angeles Church of God in Christ
Clarence E McClendon Ministries
Baptist Ministers Conference of LA & Southern California
LA Metropolitan Churches
Representatives of these churches and other community organizations held a
press conference today, June 20th, in front of LA City Hall "to make a public
request of elected officials and employers to put our people to work." Bishop
Noble Jones of City of Refuge stated, "We must have viable employment and
livable wages to effectively dismantle the
'cradle-to-prison-to-early-death-pipeline.'" The solution put forward by this
group is "The United Job Creation Initiative", a resolution seeking to mandate
that a percentage of public and private construction jobs within the areas of
its jurisdiction will be set aside for local residents. Especially to be
targeted for training into these jobs are residents who are classified as
'At-risk'. These are those who:
1) did not complete high school
2) history of substance abuse
3) household income below median
4) homeless
5) welfare recipient
6) history of involvement with the justice system
7) ex-gang affiliated
8) chronically unemployed
The alliance issued a call to "Faith based organizations and other community
service, civic and labor organizations' to join this development program. They
are seeking to gather 100,000 signatories to the petitions by August 31st.
Those interested may call
Tony Massengale 626-485-3612
Rick Stoff 310-392-4117 X 322
(Note the petition will be sent in a separate e-mail if requested by the
reader of this post.)
