[Marxism] Re: reading Capital

The "steely resolve" of stripping away "self-delusions and convenient
personal promises against speaking the truth" has apparently served
Rakesh well.

On the other hand, Rakesh's own interest in Carrol's concern with
such subjects is in internal conflict with the very criticism. Why
does he bother? Why does it disturb one who professedly ignores such
themes himself?

However, Rakesh is in good company. George Novack, prolific writer of
essays, books, and unattributed political resolutions, would never
compromise on any question regarding middle-class individuals.
Undoubtedly, because he was one. Marxism was the theory and tool of
the working class -- end of story.

However, George had so assimilated this that he never personally
criticized another along these lines. And he probably would have had
the greatest sympathy for one who, after all, is an educator in
English, which is about this subject above all. In fact, Carrol
should be complimented, rather than criticized, for bringing us his
insight from his field of expertise.

Unfortunately, I haven't reread Mansfield Park, as promised. But when
I do, it will be with Carrol's insight in mind.
