Ghana played beautify soccer. Playing againt a team that everyone thought
would beat heavily against Ghana. All commentators, assuming that since
Czech Rep., being European, would defeat the poor Ghanans. But. Happily for
those of us who root for the African countries and their beauty in football,
they showed a flair for 90:00 minutes.

Yes, they did. I watched the game and it was a joy to behold. Ghana, the
Ivory Coast, Angola, they play with such joy and self expression, almost a
mirror image of their culture.

Argentina have been simply magnificent. One of the most inspiring sights,
watching them, is to see Diego Maradona in the crowd as a fan, not as a
dignitary sitting up in the corporate seats, but as an ordinary fan wearing an
Argentinian jersey and cheering on his team. You'd never think he was/is
arguably
the greatest player ever to play the game. Maradona, of course, sought help
for his cocaine addiction in Cuba, where he spent a lot of time getting
himself together. He is a great supporter of the Cuban revolution.

Here, in the UK, in advance of England's first game against Paraguay, one of
the newspaper's ran an interesting piece comparing the income and lifestyle
of England's star player, David Beckham, and Paraguay's star player (whose
name has slipped my mind).
Whilst Beckham is paid in the region of $20 million a year, not counting
advertising endorsements, whilst he lives in luxury with homes in London and
Madrid, flies everywhere by private jet, etc., Paraguay's equivalent lives in a
shack and earns $200 per week.

England struggled to beat Paraguay 1-0 by the way.
