[Marxism] Re: Timor
SH: In response to Clinton's query, here are some references on the CPD-RDTL's
refusal to accept the UN occupation of East Timor and its repression by the
Fretilin government and UN forces.
CF: Actually, my query was about your claim that "CPD-RDTL/F... organised
against the Australian-led occupation of East Timor in 1999". I am aware of
their current feelings, and note that they would cheerfully accept the UN had
they been in a majority position. They are trying to wish away 24 years of
Indonesian military rule. Understandable, but very problematic.
The Randall Garrison article you posted says: "The anti-Fretilin riots which
broke out in Baucau and Dili in March 2002 were widely seen as having been
incited, if not organised, by the CPD-RDTL".
The CPD-RDTL is being blamed for a lot of things while Alkatiri is seen as the
embattled defender of East Timor against the World Bank and so on. Interesting
to see the anti-Stalinist state capitalists defend Alkatiri... Surprises are in
store once the auditors have their day.
