No, they are too much of a intellectual fringe. At the moment we have to

Is this generally, or during World Cup fervour?

We can all be a bit too moralistic about this sort of thing during football
season. Yes, I know football is all about tribalism, nationalism,
anti-subjectivity in the face of a priori collectivist identity which has a
fascistic streak, but that's probably to take it all far too seriously for
the main part. England flags have become fashionable in the last 10 years or
so over here, but mainly during the football season. There are so many
working-class people who enjoy rallying behind a flag during the football
that it's too easy for Marxist intellectuals to throw up their hands,
Adorno-fashion, in despair, finding a fascist in anyone who simply feels an
emotional attachment to their country's team. I'm not saying people here do
that, but it is something I've encountered on the (primarily middle-class)
left. Lenin's notion of the working class having no country seems highly
idealistic during World Cup season. Can we really argue this is simply a
disease of capitalism, without becoming highly patronising?

Solidarity,
Ian
