What if, what if. If there wouldn't be the "if", I would be a rich
man... or so.
Anyway, seriously, I can't really answer the question, since I am not
some <name_that_person>-ist, but as a proletarian revolutionist, I would
have been at first disgusted, since national unity is worth nothing if
it is bought by a soup of lentils, i.e. by subjugating the fate of the
nation to the imperialist design of my former master. Remaining neutral,
as the Argentinian bourgeoisie tried to do (under Peron) would have been
better.
But the pinching demand and slogan would have been that, OK, if we
want to fight fascism, we have to end all kinds of colonial slavery, not
only by giving up direct rule of England over any part of Eire, and
ending partition, but by giving independence for each and every colony
and protectorate in the British Empire -- give free India, Nigeria,
Arabia, Egypt, East, West and South Africa, and give the Malvinas back
to Argentina.
Such liberating actions are the sharpest weapons to fight fascism, on
the one hand, they throw away the loot for which's possession the German
capitalist waged war against Britain, thus making that war senseless and
futile, and on the other hand, it would give a strong political signal
to the German workers, that we also do not stick with our rulers.
I would also call on the Irish government to send emissaries a) into
all British colonies to talk to our brothers and sisters there, and
calling them to join the fight for liberation, i.e. for national
independence, and b) to Germany, and the German occupied areas, as far
as safely possible, and try to establish links with workers there, to
explain that we do not join the war in order to defeat the German
nation, but to liberate the world from any kind of oppression and
discrimination, ending all forms of colonialism and racism.
And also to send emissaries to the Blacks in the United States,
talking to them that the end of Jim Crow (i.e. of institutionalised
racism) in the USA should also be a goal of that common struggle, not to
expand US imperialism to the whole of the Pacific Rim, and that
independence for Puerto Rico and the Philipines should be implemented
immediately.
That's what I think the agitation should have gone in the previous
world war.
Yours,
Lüko Willms
