The reason I suggest that he probably wasn't "beaten to death by US troops"
is that they seem to have no real ability to keep secrets for long there. I
don't think enlisted men would have taken on themselves the heat for it, and
the higher up such an act would originate, the greater the chance of it
coming out and the more damaging it would be.

As to the trail of Saddam, it's not gone well for them, but I'd suggest that
seeing it as "the biggest political disaster since the Reichstag Fire
Trials" might be a bit overstated. There have certainly been lots of
political disasters since then.

Impossible to say of course. But I tend to think not. After all their
current show trial of Saddam & al is going so very badly for them.
