Avnery genuinely wants a democratic Israel and opposes Zionist supremacism,
and most of his life's work reflects this. But I think someone like Marwan
Barghouti, for example, who would otherwise have the greatest respect for
Avnery, would have a problem with some of his formulations, especially that
of the "Israeli Democratic Republic" which suggests something less than the
founding of a new state with the Palestinians as full participants. That
being said, I think Avnery and Barghouti could coexist happily in the same
party where these apparent doctrinal differences would very likely narrow
rather than widen on the basis of substantially the same outlook and a
common practice.
