Re: [Marxism] Victoria Woodhull and dogmatic Marxism

I want to second Tom's hesitations re the Messer-Kruse book. I picked it up at
the library a year or so ago, as I always wanted to know more about the
dispute he describes. But I had to put it down after about 20 pages. It was so
thoroughly dripping with antimarxism and antiMarxist hatred that I didn't feel
I could even trust his veracity. I decided it wasn't worth my time at the
moment to read it -- not unless I was ready to search out alternative sources
without an axe to grind (or at least with different axes to grind).

There's a book waiting to be written about this episode but this ain't it.

In the meantime for an excellent examination of a struggle successfully
integrating class, national and gender dynamics I heartily second Louis'
recommendation at the end of his review of Messer-Kruse of "Salt of the
Earth." I saw it recently again after a lapse of about 25 years. I'd forgotten
how superb it is.
