[Marxism] Re: Is ethanol clean?

Selections from an interview given by Professor Luiz Pinguelli from
Coordination of Graduate Programmes in Engineering, Federal University of
Rio de Janeiro, to the university's house organ, _Jornal da UFRJ_, May 2006
issue:

"Biodiesel, at bottom, is a solution to a problem of _overproduction of
soybeans in Brazil_ [my emphasis], a glut resulting from an international
crisis. In the same way, the crisis in the intrenational market of sugar was
the overulling factor in the launching of a Brazilian national ethanol
project. A market was found for sugarcane by turning it into ethanol.

[...The role of Fossile fuels in our society] has mostly to do with a
pattern of profilgate, intense consumprtion of energy and raw materials,
from the stimulus to the use of [personal] automobiles, from great social
disparities [...] It's a bit of naiveté to think the world bound to be
changed by a change in energy consumption patterns [...] The world must be
changed because of a lot of other reasons, which include better patterns in
the generation of energy" .
