I don't understand this at all. It seems sort of the equivalent to (say)
a suggestion that the way to deal with global warming is to turn on the
machines that will dissipate the carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. In
fact there's an old fable about this, "Who will bell the cat?"
Carlos answers:
To deal with global warming and other environmental people-made disasters
does no require to end industries, it is necessary to reconvert industries
to environmentally sustainable forms, end the oil dependency, apply alterna-
tive means of creating energy. But, these very democratic demands for the human
specie to survive will confront the very roots of the system:
profits. The mass mnovement should break the bourgeois resistance to
reconvert the world's productive apparatus and that will inevitably lead to
wrest ownership of the means of production our of the bourgeoisie's hands.
Every fight for reform in this sense is useful as it will clearluy show
hows the ruling class opposes changes.
The same method applies to the discussion of the armed forces in Argentina: to
abolish
THIS (underline as not to get entangled in a general discussion about
armies in general, but the specific of this one) military requires the defense
of civil liberties and democratic rights potentially threatened by the
officer staff. THIS army is not reformable and serve no purpose other than
eventually recover for its present day crisis and, with the support of political
parties of the boureoisie - as it happened in 1976 - to take power through a new
coup d'etat. Accomodating those who would like to reform them and, once a while
criticizing it for its past, and maybe mildly sanctioning indiscipline will only
encourage the repetition of the "dirty war." Not now, not in a year from now,
but eventually. Who should bell the cat? A mass movement, of course. But for
that mass movement to exist, someone should point out the need to organize it.
Maybe we will fail ins topping the bourgeoisie before it completely destroys
the environment and maybe we will fail in our campaign to
abolish the military. But we should try. That's revolutionary, in both cases.
Walter: I did not respond to anything you said because other than the
sarcasm and empty accusations, I could not find any political point or
fact other than your subjective feelings and your religious
faith in the Cubans who, IMO, were saying: "Nothing is tobe done because
Kirchner is doint it." You did not try to answer ajny of the facts I posed.
You just dismissed them. But your opinions and feelings about
Castro and the Cubans don't constitute more than political
nothingness and your personal opinions of me do not change an
iota the problem of the argentinean military.
