Helpful to what? Louise doesn't like debate, apparently -- not even
when the majority of contributors are on her side -- most of them
unequivocally and uncritically. Is there so much of a bad conscience
on this list that debate can be shut down simply by someone claiming
offense around the use of a single term in a relevant context? If
Louis or anybody had responded to a woman -- say -- in the heat of
debate, by calling her a whore, or I thought that anybody was calling
an academic whore a whore based on gender (instead of whoring), I
would be the first to take issue. When did this become a touchy-
feely list anyway? If Louise or anybody decides tomorrow or whenever
to read through Marx (are we still concerned with Marxism?) and
therein finds a bunch of gendered metaphors (e.g., society being
'pregnant'), should we then abandon all of Marx too, some of it, what?
To see people browbeaten into submission and endless apologies over
-- exactly -- nothing is pathetic.
Here's the sequence of events: Louise makes a complaint, gets a bunch
of support, little in the way of opposition or counter-argument, a
bunch of apologies, then decides she's not satisfied and quits the
list. That makes sense to you?
Furthermore, you have no right to refer to my comment as an 'ugly
little comment'. For all your apparent hyper-sensitivity, you
apparently have no qualms about making really offensive remarks
(behind your computer that is, since I doubt you talk like that
anywhere else).
