Further on dropping the word "niggardly" (I feel like we've each contributed 
the same comments a few months ago, but in any case):
In the memorial anthology for Jim Cannon, someone tells the story of how he was 
getting a great reception from a Black audience, until midway through the 
speech they went dead and never made another sound. Someone pointed out later 
that the change occurred when he used the word niggardly. He never used the 
word again.
