[Marxism] Female Pundits Could Use Help With Hate Mail

An interesting commentary in light of the current discussion on why
women don't participate very much on political discussion lists.

Another part of it, I believe, is the competitive, dominating dynamic
on many listserves. My experience is that women consider a discussion
productive when people come closer together or understand each other
better but don't feel elation or satisfaction when one side wins over
another. This is not an essentialist argument I'm making. Women can be
extremely competitive. But in the realm of ideas I don't find that
women see progress defined by destroying an opposing argument. Nor do
all men. But more men than women, imo, seem to persistently engage in
aggressive debate.

BTW, you'll find a lot more women posting to activist listserves and
the meetings I've attended in the last year or so have had very active
leadership from women.

Female Pundits Could Use Help With Hate Mail

When Heidi Schnakenberg took up opinion writing she had no idea that
she would come under such savage personal attack. Female pundits, she
says, take special flak and can be driven into retreat if they don't
have enough moral support.
