[Marxism] Canadian healthcare better than US

  By the way, last night PNHP sponsored a talk by Paul Krugman, during  which 
he mentioned the coming release of that study, and several times  said the 
media lies about the Canadian and British systems, which he  said (correctly) 
are superior.
  (His coauthor of the NYRB essay on healthcare, Robin Wells, made some  very 
eloquent comments as well; their article is at  
http://www.nybooks.com/articles/18802).
  Most of his speech was excellent. There were, however, two related downsides:
  1) He said explicitly and repeatedly that markets in healthcare can't  work, 
but each time said that he's in favor of markets generally;
  2) He expressed his confusion as to why GM would promote single-payer  in 
Canada and not here. In answer to a question he admitted that  perhaps they 
were happy to go the Walmart route. That's certainly the  real answer, 
especially as they've been cutting healthcare massively.
  His unclarity about corporations' motives, combined with his attachment  to 
markets in general, helps explain why he had no suggestions on how  we'll get 
to singlepayer.
  Nonetheless when the DVD of his speech becomes available it's  definitely 
worth getting for many good arguments in favor of  single-payer.
