[Marxism] Ron Jacobs article on direct action against shipping material to Iraq
Ron Jacobs writes about campaign of direct action in Olympia,
Washington, against shipment military shipments to Iraq. He compares
the present actions to earlier actions of the Berkeley Vietnam Day
Committee against troop trains carrying soldiers on their way to
Vietnam and has an e-mail interview with one of the leaders of the
action.
Olympia is a small city of 50,000 (100,000 including environs), the
capital of the state and near the huge Ft. Washington army base
(30,000 military and civilian personnel). Tacoma, Washington (pop.
200,000) is a similar distance and more oriented towards the base.
Fort Lewis is the home of I Corps, 2d Cavalry Regement and Madigan
Army Medical Center, as well as the Army's first two Stryker
Brigades, the 1st Brigade, 25th Infantry Division and 3rd Brigade,
2nd Infantry Division. Additionally, the post is home to several I
Corps Major Subordinate Commands, units from Western Region Medical
Command, Special Operations Command, Cadet Command, Fifth Army (AC/
RC), and a number of other non-divisional support units and
resident organizations. --Ft. Lewis web page
Be sure to look at the Olympia URLs, which are about far more than
the direct action campaign. "Create one, two, three, many Olympia
antiwar campaigns!"
In a recent statement to the community and the media, OMJP and PMR
spoke about the complicity of the common citizen. In part, it read:
The weapons shipments, and the use of our public property to
prolong and supply the war in Iraq have made us complicit in crimes
against humanity. We refuse to be complicit any longer. We will
continue to utilize every available instrument of democracy,
including direct action and disruption when necessary. We are
working to stop the war machine by standing in front of the
machines of war as they attempt to enter our port. Just as soldiers
have a responsibility to disobey unlawful orders we have a
responsibility to refuse to cooperate with the American Empire.
The first URL is the Jacobs article. The others are of the Olympia
antiwar group.
