What analyses like these trend to miss out was that East Timor was
also thoroughly exploited by imperialist corporations *before*
independence - and that the mediation of this exploitation though the
not so tender mercies of the Indonesian military included systematic
execution and general repression of independence activists and anyone
trying to fight for East Timor's toilers (and that's since the near
genocidal mass terror and starvation tactics of the 1980s).
Why am I not surprised that a DSP'er finds the analysis flawed. Given
the fact that these comrades endorsed the "humanitarian intervention"
that the article repudiated, they are forced to come to terms with how
bad things have turned out. Hopefully, if as John Percy warns, the DSP
is abandoning Cannonist principles, they might come to the point where
a free-wheeling discussion about East Timor can take place. I know
that in Cannonist groups, it is virtually impossible to have one.
Crossing my fingers...
