Walter, you should get out of the habit of answering points through a link
to an article written by somebody else. Gerald Horne is not on this list
and it would be a waste of my time to answer his article in "Political
Affairs".

We are dealing with essentially two different phenomena. One is the threat
to US hegemony posed by a growing Chinese economy and the other is how to
characterize Chinese society. Of course, in some ways they are
inter-related. Through super-exploitation of its working class, China has
become a giant capitalist economy. But I am not sure that this means that
it is on the side of the angels. China's foreign policy, even when Mao was
alive, was not based on socialist principles but bourgeois nationalism. If
Nixon could go to China and cut deals over the heads of the Vietnamese,
what's to prevent China from throwing Cuba to the wolves if the price was
right?
