[Marxism] Herbert L. Matthews and the New York Times on Cuba

Last Sunday the New York Times ran a puffy review of Anthony DePalma's
dreadful THE MAN WHO INVENTED FIDEL, an attempt to assassinate both
the character and the reputation of a dead man, the New York Times
reporter who provided accurate and clearly favorable reporting in the
New York Times during a period when the Batista dictatorship was then
using the media to spread the notion that Fidel Castro was dead. The
implication was that, as all dictators want their populations to say,
that resistance is futile. I noted at that time that the Times, which
I often refer to as the New York Slimes for its smarmy hostility to
Cuba's revolution, has done something different and good today: it
is running in PDF all three of the actual articles which Matthews
wrote at that time, so readers can see and assess how they hold up
for themselves. It is necessary to register to obtain access to the
articles, but registration to the New York Times is mercifully free.

Here's the story with all the links.
