Apples and bananas are fruits and can be compared as such. Soccer is one of
the most complex phenomena of the industrial era; it can be alienating, but
it can be a mobilizing factor also, just like theatre. The first banners
against the military regime in Brazil appeared in soccer stadiums - and
researchers showed that people interested in soccer were more likely to be
interested in politics than people not interested in soccer. The fact that
Che Guevara T shirts are sold by multinationals does not transform the cult
of the Che in an alienating factor, though it sometimes is de facto
alienating.
