STRIKE - Online Journal of Left & Socialist Politics & Culture
Premier Issue Â? 22 April 2006
www.StrikeOnline.org
Welcome to Strike, a monthly online journal of left and socialist politics.
Strike
publishes articles on international and North American politics, history,
theory,
practice and analysis from left and especially socialist perspectives. Read on
to
see whatÂ?'s in the first issue of Strike...
FEATURES:
VIETNAM SYNDROME, THE PEACE MOVEMENT AND THE U.S. LEFT
The anti-Vietnam war movement produced a political perspective that went far
beyond
knee-jerk self-interest, despite the military draft. Ethan Young examines why
opposition
is so much quieter now than in the Â?60s and Â?70s.
THE RESERVE ARMY OF FRANCE'S BANLIEUES
With the riots in the deprived outer suburbs of Paris we are witnessing a return
to a time when the fault line ran between the people of no property and the
propertied
class. Ronald van Raak argues that it's time for Marx.

INTERNATIONAL
FRANCE TAKES TO THE STREETS
The vast opposition to the French Labour bill is intrinsically connected with
the
general crisis of the system, the impact of globalization and of European
integration.
But the radical left has yet to connect with this new social movement, according
to Bruno Drweski.
PARIS COMES TO KURDISTAN
Sinan Esim reports that those who have nothing to lose but their chains have
rebelled
in Diyarbakir in the same manner as in Paris. These uprisings are threatening
the
Kurdish bourgeoisie and increasing the pressure on a Turkish government and
military
debilitated by its EU desires and the disastrous impact of the U.S. Iraq war.
EU ADOPTS BUSH-STYLE IMMIGRATION STRATEGIES
The effects of labor migration from the former Soviet bloc countries of central
and eastern Europe present problems for the labor movement and the left in the
host
economies of the west. That it occurs at a time of rising racism and far right
political
activity adds to the crisis, writes Steve McGiffen, as African migrants have
become
scapegoats for the problems of the EU's mismanaged and increasingly deregulated
economies.

NORTH AMERICA
U.S. ACTIVISTS STORM CIA AIRLINE
Patrick OÂ?Neil tells what happened when activists tried to deliver an
indictment
to Aero Contractors, the North Carolina company that provides pilots for
corporate
jets the Central Intelligence Agency used for "extraordinary rendition."
REPRODUCTIVE RIGHTS IN ACTION
Strike speaks with Karen Kubby, Executive Director of the Emma Goldman Clinic in
Iowa City, Iowa.
