Is it a road to disaster? Lately I've been thinking that for the
Exxon/Mobils of the world, the current situation is a win win. They win
if the US military helps them get control of Iraq/Iran oil, they win if
the whole business goes down in flames.
With millions of barrels of Middle Eastern oil off the market, the
holdings that they do have are worth far more, and the cost of getting
increasingly expensive to obtain oil out of deep sea drilling and tar
sands is made possible by much higher prices, accompanied by demand
destruction that will make supplying the market easier, at least in
wealthy countries.
Poor countries of course, will be up the creek. But that is not a major
concern for them.
