Dear Louis,
I just read this piece and it can be summed up in the second to the last
paragraph, "The national Democratic Party long since abandoned even the
pretense that the quadrennial national party convention is there to
formulate a party platform responsive to the demands and programs of the
party's base membership. Any talk about resuscitating the Democratic Party
has to address this issue."
This is a fatal flaw in thinking. There is no hope for a party that
represents both the Capitalist class and the working class. The two cannot
coexist because they have diametrically opposed class interests, i.e.,
workers under Capitalism are at the mercy of the Capitalist class that makes
laws designed to enslave the working class and hires the forces to enforce
those laws.
The wealthy get away with all sorts of crimes far greater than the crimes
committed by those that fill the U.S. jails--mostly crimes of poverty.
Capitalism and the Capitalists that rule it are guilty of human genocide
from Hiroshima and Nagasaki to a preemptive war based upon lies that has
killed hundreds of thousands; to the routine slaughter of poverty they
inflict on the poor in a myriad of ways day in and day out.
Capitalism is directly responsible for the spread of disease by refusing
medicine to those that can't pay, and the ongoing starvation of hundreds of
millions of innocent people every day by withholding, by force of the threat
of the Earth's destruction itself, the resources necessary to end this long
standing human misery. War is the mechanism they use to maintain their power
and control over this fatally flawed relationship between workers and their
Capitalist masters. Imagine! They get most of us to help them to continue
this relationship of forces! Without our cooperation they would have
nothing!
Capitalists can be allies of workers. But that means that they too have to
break with the parties that pretend to represent both Capitalists and
workers. Capitalist can only become true allies if they break with these
parties and pledge their allegiance to the working class and a party of, by
and for the working class and their allies alone, and in bold opposition to
the whole system of Capitalism worldwide.
I am putting all my eggs in the basked of the World Socialist Revolution,
democratically led by the world's working class, in direct and complete
opposition to Capitalism everywhere. And I think many Capitalists will
eventually join in the struggle and "do the right thing" and declare their
allegiance to the World Socialist Revolution. But it is the Capitalists that
must cross their class line, certainly, not us!
Yours for Socialism, not Barbarism.
