[Marxism] From the archives, German socialism at beginning of 20th c.

New York Times, London, Sept. 28, 1901
SOCIALISTS AT LUEBECK
Bernstein Would Have Them Dream Less and Work More

The chief figures at the Socialists’ Congress in Lubeck this week were Eduard Bernstein and August Bebel. Bernstein was banished from Germany a quarter of a century ago and has dwelt in Switzerland and London. This reform in Socialism is trying to make his fellows dream less and work more; he is accused of being an Opportunist and was voted down in the convention, but his writings reach every German workingman and form the most potent force Socialism now exerts.

Herr Bebel, who overcame Bernstein in the convention, is a man of wonderful eloquence, visionary, but opposed to revolution and bloodshed.

The convention was merely a matter of speechmaking, and will come to nothing, and, except for the strong personal force of Bernstein, developed nothing concerning the powers supposedly antagonistic to modern society.
