[Marxism] Bachelet Takes Oath as Chile's President

There's a terrific report on NPR today about the inauguration
of Michelle Bachelet in Santiago. You can listen as the NPR
reporter gets lifted up and carried away with the enthusiasm
for Evo Morales who came to attend the inauguration. Bolivia
lacks access to the sea, and a sea of humans chanted for the
Bolivians, long at odds with Chile, to obtain access to the
ocean. And though Condoleezza Rice has said a few sweet words
about Evo Morales's humble origins, you can listen as Evo
told the cheering multitudes about his support for regional
integration. He further explained that there are two kinds
of green contending in the region: coca, the medicinal plant
which Bolivians have been eating for ages, and the green of
the U.S. dollar. Hear the inspiring the 4 minute NPR report.

Evo-Bachelet: An Historic Meeting

Santiago de Chile, March 11,- Evo Morales is the first President of Bolivia
to visit Chile in more than one hundred years. He is attending the swearing
in ceremony of Michelle Bachelet, whom he met today, with the hope of
agreeing on social solutions for the region, according to an ANSA news
agency dispatch.

The visit of President Morales to Chile is significant due to the long
standing dispute between the two nations that dates back to the Pacific War,
in 1879, when areas of Bolivian territory were taken away from the South
American nation, including its outlet to the Pacific Ocean.

After his meeting with Bachelet, who will become Chile's President on
Sunday, Morales told ANSA that he considers the future President as "a
comrade and a source of hope for the people".

"I am sure that the people are anticipating with much hope, and we would
like to succeed in finding social solutions and, together, be in a position
for changes in Bolivia, Chile, and why not say it. in all of Latin America,"
Morales underscored.

The Bolivian President highlighted the current coincidence that, both in
Chile and in Bolivia, representatives of two marginalized and excluded
sectors of the population -women and indigenous people- have the
"opportunity to lead."

Chilean President-elect Receives Cuban VP

SANTIAGO DE CHILE, March 10 (PL) -The Cuban Vice President Carlos Lage, who
is heading his nation's delegation to the ceremony marking the change of
government in Chile, was received today by President-elect Michelle
Bachelet.

The meeting, which took place in the Andres Bello Diplomatic Academy, was
conducted in a friendly and relaxed atmosphere a few hours after the
island's senior official arrived in Santiago.

Bachelet, elected president with slightly more than 54 percent of the votes
on January 15, will officially assume office Sunday before the National
Congress as the first woman who has occupied that responsibility in the
history of Chile.

"We bring the warmest greetings from the people of Cuba, from our President
Fidel Castro, to our brothers and sisters in solidarity, the beloved Chilean
people, and our most sincere desires for the success of the elected leader
Michelle Bachelet," declared the Cuban vice president.

The delegation is also made up of Foreign Minister Felipe Perez Roque; the
vice minister of Foreign Affairs, Yilliam Jimenez; and the vice deputy of
the Department of International Relations of the Central Committee of the
Communist Party of Cuba, Jose Arbezu.

Also in the delegation are Alejandro Gonzalez, director of the Latin
American and Caribbean Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs; and
Girardo Mazola, the Cuban designate ambassador in Santiago.

Soon after the conversation with the future Chilean leader, Lage and Perez
Roque attended a farewell dinner that retiring president Ricardo Lagos gave
for the heads of the more than one hundred delegations attending the
transfer of leadership ceremony.
