[Marxism] RE: SWP and the turn to industry

Among revolutionaries, it is probably pretty well agreed that employment is
first a political decision and only secondarily a personal one. Perhaps (we
don't know) the SWP had what it thought was a compelling reason to ask Sarge to
switch from one industry to another in Detroit, while he felt an compelling
justification not to do this. Fine--this is probably an ordinary kind of
problem between cadre and org. I'm sure it's happened much more than just this
once. But it doesn't have to result in cadre expulsion and the complete loss of
the cadre's talent. Instead, for example, the cadre and org could agree that
the cadre would cease being a member but would remain an active Supporter of
the org. And there are other possible alternative solutions to expulsion. One
could do a cost/benefit analysis on each of them. However, until we have data
and accurate participant testimony about these matters, little can be learned
from these experiences, however important they may be and
however important the lessons we could learn from them may be. No data, no
learning; no learning, no possibility of improvement. Not a pleasing prospect.

Brian asked about the term "route." The SWP was using this term
in the 80's
to describe the blows dealt to the workers by the capitalists
for the most
part without resistance (and most cases where there was
some like PATCO and
the copper miners, the workers were soundly defeated).
I hope that is
clearer.

Howard Heeth expressed regret for Sarge's expulsion, and I
certainly felt
bad for him having to suffer such an outrage (being an
autoworker in
Detroit, what a crime against the proletariat!). On the
other hand at least
now he doesn't have to continue to endure the nonsense
anymore.

Joe
