[Marxism] Some background on Sherman's march...



Re Mark's description of the motives and character of the successive Union
campaigns:
if I remember right, Bruce Catton, among others (he's the one I've read most
recently and therefore the one who sticks in my poor peabrain), pegs Lincoln's
continual delay in moving against slavery to his fear of alienating the border
states. But the flip side of that would obviously be Lincoln's hope that poor
whites in those states would stay with the war once its character changed even
if their political masters didn't. So Mark's earlier post about Lincoln's delay
should be read along with the one he just posted on the military chronology.
I do have one question though: Mark refers to the logistical difficulties of
operating in the hilly border states; are the generals encountering those
difficulties the same ones who were supposedly footdraggers? (not McClellan but
Halleck et al.)

I've probably garbled much of this but wanted to put it out there for
elucidation by those who really know.
