[Marxism] Nearing v. Foster

alanb quotes Lenin on the need to "link up, maintain the closest contact, and?
if you wish?merge, in certain measure, with the broadest masses of the
working people?primarily with the proletariat, but also with the non-
proletarian masses of working people."

This is as good an introduction as any to a debate I was going to refer to
today. Just
posted at the MIA thanks to the Early American Marxism archive is a debate
between
Scott Nearing and William Z. Foster on the strategy of the TUEL and CP and
whether it was based on an accurate assessment of the mood of the masses and
what the
role of the party and its mass organizations should be (or whether it should
even have
them).

No-one will be surprised to hear my sympathies are with Foster in this
debate, which
has lessons for our time, however different this decade is from the 1920's.
