Engels did recognize the genius of Stonewall Jackson early on and
bemoaned the failure of the Union to develop such innovative commanders.
They had, of course, but only to the west, beyond that little eastern
sliver emphasized in the New York and European papers.
August Willich was off in the west in Kentucky and Tennessee. And
Joseph Weydemeyer was even further west in Missouri. It's quite clear
from the published correspondence that not only did neither of them
implement any plans of Marx and Engels but were almost entirely out of
touch with them.
Apparently, though, the Americans figured out how to win the Civil War
without Engels. The successful Union military strategy was called "the
Anaconda Plan," because (like the constrictor snake) it was to encircle
and choke the Confederacy piecemeal. It was formulated by the aged
General Winfield "Fuss and Feathers" Scott in 1861, and was widely
discussed in most of the major papers, including those Marx and Engels
read.
So, maybe we'll have to rest Engels' claims to genius on something else.
Solidarity!

CB: Wasn't Sherman's march to the see the key, a splitting move, not an
encirclement ? I don't know if the Union got the idea _from_ Engels, but
there it is in the article in March 1862 , which is before Sherman's army
actually carried it out. Also, didn't Marx and Engels write directly to
Lincoln ?
