Skype is used here in Australia because of the distances and phone call costs 
for a bit of political organising. But the conferencing limit is bettered by 
other free programs like Paltalk.

It is also used standardly in podcasting as a basis for audio--station to 
station -- interviews.I'll be doing a Skype recorded podcast interview this 
week with a Unite trade union organiser in New Zealand -and I hope to push the 
Skype envelope as far as I can this year as other (telephone)record setups are 
so difficult or costly to engineer. Besides, Skype offers better audio quality.

If more people were on it ---collecting material and quotes or doing interviews 
for journalistic articles would be a lot easier & cheaper.

Whether it's open sourced or not is hardly relevant to what we use day to day 
-- as we're all stuck with the progamming and operating systems we are offered.

To RECORD  a Skype call (and there is an add on --Pamela -- which will do that 
if you want it as part of the same system) is easy if you have a recording 
program (such as the free and open sourced Audacity or Gragae Band) and a 
soundcard that can access the RECORD ALL option.

But there is one trick that any podcaster will tell you: make sure both ends 
are closed systems and each one on the exchange are wearing earphones as well 
as using a mic -- otherwise you get annoying fold back which distorts the sound.

Sype's pc to telephone option --which you buy credits for --makes for cheap 
phone calls but because the  fold back is unchecked, the connection isn't very 
useful, I find, for a two way conversation even though one price can ring you 
anywhere in the world --handset or mobile. But it is cheap!!
